Self-Help for the Elderly -- Helping Seniors Help Themselves Since 1966

Social Services Self-Help for the Elderly's Social Service Department provides a variety of social service programs that are designed to enable seniors to remain independent and live in their own homes and communities.

All services are provided free of charge and are available to all San Francisco seniors. Our staff speaks English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Russian.

Funding provided by San Francisco Office on Aging, Department of Aging and Adult Services, San Francisco Mayor's Office of Community Development and California Department of Education.

Neighborhood Resource Center Provide information and assistance to seniors and disabled adults regarding community programs. The centers are located in Chinatown, Sunset, and Tenderloin neighborhoods.

Housing Information Program Provides information and assistance regarding housing opportunities and home safety assessments.

Social Workers Provide short-term casework services such as arranging services, providing assistance, and conducting home visits. Social workers are located in the Chinatown, Sunset, and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods.

Care Management Includes long-term services designed to coordinate and facilities access to health, social, and personal care services for frail seniors.

Elder Abuse Prevention and Intervention Provides care management services to victims of elder abuse, as well as community education presentations.

Naturalization Program Offers numerous ESL/Citizenship and Civics classes throughout San Francisco. Staff also provides individual assistance with applying for citizenship.

Elder Care at Home A short-term non-medical in-home supportive services program for seniors and disabled adults who live in San Francisco and require emergency services. Services include personal care, homemaker, and household chores.

HICAP (Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program) A volunteer based program that provides unbiased information about Medicare, related health care coverage, and long-term care insurance to Medicare beneficiaries in San Francisco and San Mateo Counties. More...
