Self-Help for the Elderly -- Helping Seniors Help Themselves Since 1966

Volunteer Your Time Self-Help needs volunteers throughout the year to help in the agency’s various programs. Many of our volunteers help at special events, provide direct service to our programs/seniors or come in on an on-call basis.

Special events If you are not available Monday - Friday during office hours, you can volunteer for a variety of special events on weekends and/or evenings.

Direct service If you would like to provide direct service to seniors or volunteer on a regular basis, you can be assigned to a program where there is an immediate need for volunteers and where your interests lie. Some duties may include working directly with seniors at our senior centers, general office work, data entry, tutoring or staffing a phone line.

HICAP Volunteers

  • A HICAP Volunteer is a person genuinely concerned with helping seniors and Disabled Individuals understand their Medicare rights. They are registered by the State of California after they go through extensive 36 hour classroom training and 10 hours of internship. After the registration, we ask that you provide counseling services at least 6 hours a month at various counseling sites throughout the San Francisco County area. Because the training is so intense, we do require at least a one year commitment to the San Francisco HICAP Program or San Mateo HICAP Program. If you are still interested in becoming a HICAP Volunteer, please email info@selfhelpelderly.org.

On-call basis On a periodic basis, you can volunteer for short-term projects, such as mass mailings, moving and hauling, and flyer distribution.
