Housing Subsidies Program

Arthritic hands holding a flower Are you facing challenges covering your rent in San Francisco? The Social Services Department at Self-Help for the Elderly collaborates with the Department of Disability and Aging Services to offer assistance through the Housing Subsidies Program. This initiative is aimed at supporting eligible seniors and disabled adults by providing housing subsidies and management services.

The program's primary goal is to assist individuals dealing with immediate housing needs and rental management issues, safeguarding them from eviction or homelessness due to an unstable income or an inability to afford rent. Approved individuals who meet the criteria will be granted housing subsidies, with a maximum limit of $800, to help cover their rent. We strongly encourage you to submit an application for consideration.

if you are:

  • San Francisco resident, and
  • Aged 60+ or younger disabled adult, and
  • Having a hard time paying rent

and filled with the following requirements:

  • Income no more than $40,350* per year for one person
    (*Annual Income below AMI 40%)
  • Lacking stable housing or at risk of homelessness*
(* Your rent costs 70% or above of your income)
  • Not currently receiving any other housing subsidies

Important Note: All applications will be received on a first-come, first-served basis and handled case-by-case basis. Submitting an application does not guarantee approval or a subsidy amount. An official home visit and in-person interviews are required for all applicants.

If the Housing Subsidies Program is not suitable for you, our housing social workers collaborate closely with various city departments and community agencies. They are ready to assist you in accessing alternative city-authorized housing services and programs as needed.

Program brochures available in English and Chinese.

The program is administered by Self-Help for the Elderly – Social Services Department and fully funded by the Department of Disability and Aging Services.
